SWIMMER WARNING · READ BEFORE ENTERING
Rip currents can carry even strong swimmers away from shore.
Often called “riptides,” they are rip currents—not tides. They can form on clear days and when the forecast risk is lower. If lifeguards, beach patrol, posted signs or the National Weather Service advise against entering the surf, stay out of the water.BEFORE YOU SWIM
Choose the safer place and time.
- Swim at a lifeguard-protected beach whenever possible, ask the lifeguard about current hazards and obey every posted closure or instruction.
- Never swim alone. Closely and continuously supervise children and inexperienced swimmers—even in shallow water.
- Stay at least 100 feet away from piers and jetties, where strong and persistent rip currents can form.
- Check Brevard beach-water results. Do not swim during a health advisory, and avoid saltwater with open cuts or wounds.
- If you hear thunder, leave the water and beach immediately. Shelter in an enclosed building or hard-topped vehicle and wait 30 minutes after the last thunder.
IF A RIP CURRENT CATCHES YOU
Stay calm. Do not fight straight toward shore.
- Float and breathe. A rip current pulls you away from shore; it does not pull you under.
- Move sideways. If able, swim parallel to the shoreline—or toward breaking waves—until you are out of the current.
- Return at an angle. Once free of the current, swim diagonally toward the beach.
- Signal for help. If you cannot escape, float or tread water, face shore, wave your arms and yell.
